AgileFever — PMP exam fees: what will you pay?

PMP Exam Fee in 2026: Member Price, Non-Member Price and Retake Fee

Table of Contents

Short answer. On PMI’s US store, checked November 4, 2026, the PMP exam fee is $675 for non-members and $425 for PMI members. A retake costs $375 for non-members and $275 for members. PMI Membership is listed at $164 plus a $10 application fee. Joining before you pay saves $250 on the exam against $174 for the first membership year, a net $76 on a first attempt and $100 more if you retake. PMI allows up to three attempts in one year, and membership is not required. Prices are regional, so confirm yours at checkout.

Written by the AgileFever editorial team. Facts checked on November 4, 2026 against the official pages of the organizations named in this post. AgileFever sells training for some of the topics covered here, and we say so wherever it applies. AgileFever sells PMP exam-prep training, which this post mentions once near the end. Nothing in the fee tables depends on it.

Many pages about the PMP exam fee quote old figures or disagree with each other. We read the fee from PMI’s own online store and the rules from PMI’s handbooks and pages, then worked out the membership arithmetic. All store prices below are in US dollars from PMI’s US store. Other countries see their own prices.

PMI’s store also lists a second membership option at $154. We do not know which membership type it applies to, so the figures in this post use the $164 listing shown for standard PMI Membership. Your own checkout shows the option that applies to you.

PMI’s PMP page says the exam has 180 questions and runs 4 hours, taken at a Pearson VUE test centre (which PMI recommends) or online. The store lists a single computer-based exam price. If your checkout shows a difference by delivery method, trust the checkout.

Confirm before you pay. PMI’s handbook says fees are “subject to membership and regional pricing”. The amounts above are the US store prices. Apply on pmi.org first, because the application is free and PMI asks for the exam fee only after it accepts you. Your cart then shows your price. Take a screenshot before you pay.

Why other guides show different PMP exam fee numbers

Guides written before August 2026 still show $405 for members and $555 or $655 for non-members. Some newer guides give $445 for members. PMI’s US store listed $425 on November 4, 2026. Other guides report that the fees changed on August 6, 2026. The change date is unconfirmed, so rely on the amount in your cart. If a guide’s number differs from your checkout screen, believe the checkout.

Member vs non-member PMP exam fee: where membership breaks even

PMI says membership is separate from certification and not required. Its membership page lists member pricing under the paid Professional Membership, which it describes as 12 months of access billed annually thereafter. The 30-day trial lists other benefits but not member pricing, so do not plan on the trial lowering your exam fee.

Step Arithmetic Result
Exam saving from membership $675 non-member minus $425 member $250
First-year membership cost $164 + $10 application fee $174
Net saving, first attempt $250 minus $174 $76
Extra saving if you retake $375 non-member minus $275 member $100
Net saving, one retake $76 + $100 $176
Break-even membership price $250 minus the $10 fee $240 a year

Membership pays for itself on the first attempt by $76, and the margin grows if you fail once. It would have to cost more than $240 a year before it stopped paying off. Taxes may apply at checkout. These are US store prices, so run the same sum with the figures in your own cart.

What you pay PMI: exam fee plus membership, if needed

PMI US store prices checked November 4, 2026. Member totals include $164 membership and the $10 application fee ($174).

Non-member, pass on the second attempt ($675 + $375)$1,050
Member, pass on the second attempt ($425 + $275 + $174)$874
Non-member, pass first time$675
Member, pass first time ($425 + $174)$599

Order matters. Join before you pay, so the member price is on offer at checkout. If you already paid the non-member fee, ask PMI Customer Care before you assume a refund of the difference.

PMP exam retake fee and how many attempts you get

PMI states three rules in public. You may take the exam up to three times in one year. That year is your eligibility period. If you fail three times, you wait one year from the last attempt before you reapply. If the year ends without a pass, you reapply from the start.

The PMP handbook describes the retake as a “substantial discount” inside your eligibility period, and the store shows it: $375 against $675 for non-members, $275 against $425 for members. The cheapest outcome is still a first-time pass. Mock exams and honest weak-spot review cost less than a second sitting. Our guide on how hard the PMP exam is covers how to prepare.

PMI also says that once you schedule, you “may be subject to cancellation or no-show fees.” It gives no amount in the documents we read. Read the rescheduling terms on the scheduling screen before you book.

PMP exam fee in India, the UK and Europe

The prices in this post come from PMI’s US store, in dollars. PMI’s handbook says pricing depends on membership and region and that it accepts USD, euros, BRL and INR. Several guides say the exam fee is the same everywhere in dollars. That claim conflicts with PMI’s own wording, so do not assume it.

PMI prices the exam in your local currency, so for India read the amount in your own cart before you budget. Rupee prices differ from the dollar figures here.

PMI shows prices for other countries in the cart for that country. The only way to see your price is the cart for your country. Check it for tax too, since a rupee, pound or euro price may add VAT or GST on top.

What the PMP exam fee does not cover

The fee buys one attempt. PMI’s PMP page lists project professional training among the eligibility requirements, and that course is a separate purchase. So are practice exams and question banks. PMI lists free digital PMBOK Guide editions as a member benefit. Membership is optional and billed annually thereafter. Renewal comes every three years, as covered below.

For the whole budget with training, read PMP certification cost in the USA and our general guide to PMP certification cost. This post stays on PMI’s own fees.

PMP renewal fee and PDU rules

Your three-year cycle starts the day you pass. PMI’s continuing certification handbook (updated April 2026) requires 60 professional development units (PDUs) per cycle. At least 35 must be education: 8 in ways of working, 8 in power skills, 8 in business acumen, and 11 in any of those areas. You may claim up to 25 as giving back, such as volunteering, creating content, or working as a practitioner (up to 8 PDUs for the full cycle).

One hour of learning equals one PDU, counted in quarter-hour steps. Up to 20 PDUs earned in the final 12 months can carry into the next cycle. Keep your documents for 18 months after the cycle ends, because PMI audits at random.

PMI states renewal pricing depends on membership and region and points you to the Renew Certification link in your myPMI dashboard. Earlier PMI materials and guides give $60 for members and $150 for non-members as planning figures, and the store does not list them. You must pay within 90 days after the cycle ends. Miss the PDU requirement and the certification is suspended for 12 months while you finish.

Does membership pay for itself at renewal? On those planning figures, no. The renewal gap is $90 per three years, and a membership costs $164 a year plus the application fee. Join for the exam saving, then decide whether the free webinars, eLearning and PMI standards justify keeping it. Do not keep it for the $90 alone.

How to pay the least for the PMP exam, inside PMI’s rules

The order that keeps the PMP exam fee lowest
1
Apply first.
The application is free, and PMI asks for the exam fee only after accepting you.
2
Do the membership sum with your own cart.
Compare the member and non-member exam price shown for your country against the membership price plus the application fee.
3
Join before you pay the exam fee.
Member pricing applies to the fee you pay as a member. Check the auto-renewal setting at purchase.
4
Ask your employer before you pay anything.
Many companies reimburse the exam, the membership or both. Ask which price they will cover.
5
Schedule when you are ready.
Cancellation and no-show fees exist, and your one-year, three-attempt clock runs while you wait.
6
Plan the renewal PDUs early.
Work as a practitioner, free member webinars and eLearning can supply PDUs without extra spend.

Some things do not reduce the fee, and a few cause trouble:

  • A trial membership is not listed with member pricing on PMI’s page.
  • Student membership costs $32 on PMI’s page, but it is for full-time students and needs proof of enrolment. Do not use it if you do not qualify.
  • Third-party “discount codes” for the exam fee are not something PMI documents. Pay through your own PMI account only.
Who gains little from membership. If your employer pays the non-member fee in full and you do not want PMI’s other member benefits, the membership saving goes to the company, not to you. Ask before you join.

When did the PMP exam fee last change?

Guides written after the change say August 6, 2026, with the non-member fee rising from $555 to $675 and the member fee from $405 to $425 or $445. PMI’s store shows today’s price, not its history, so the change date is unconfirmed. Treat any guide dated before August 2026 as out of date on price.
