If you’re a full stack developer thinking about AI, two directions come up often. One is to stay a developer and get much better at using AI in your work. The other is to become a forward deployed engineer (FDE): someone who builds AI solutions and delivers them inside client businesses. In a full stack developer vs forward deployed engineer comparison, these are different jobs with different days, and the right choice depends more on what you enjoy than on what’s trending.
The two roles in one table
| AI-augmented full stack developer | Forward deployed engineer | |
|---|---|---|
| Main output | Features and products, built faster with AI | AI solutions running at a client, and adopted by their teams |
| Who you work with | Your product team | Client stakeholders, from engineers to executives |
| Typical week | Building, reviewing, testing, and shipping code | Discovery calls, building, integrating with client systems, demos |
| Core AI skill | Using AI tools well and catching what they get wrong | Building agents and RAG systems, and integrating them into enterprise platforms |
| Non-technical skill | Code review and judgment | Requirements, stakeholder management, and handling objections |
| Travel and context switching | Usually low | Often higher, across several clients |
What each path asks you to learn
Hours listed on AgileFever course pages, including the Python for AI prerequisite
Source: AgileFever course pages, October 2026. The FDE BootCamp’s 90 hours include 10 self-paced hours.
The difference in hours reflects the difference in the change. The first path makes you faster at a job you already have. The second prepares you for a different job.
Full stack developer vs forward deployed engineer: which suits you
| If you… | Lean toward |
|---|---|
| Enjoy deep focus on one codebase | AI-augmented developer |
| Like talking to users and seeing your work adopted | Forward deployed engineer |
| Want AI to make you faster without changing jobs | AI-augmented developer |
| Are curious about how different businesses work | Forward deployed engineer |
| Find meetings and presentations draining | AI-augmented developer |
| Want to build AI systems yourself, beyond using AI tools | Forward deployed engineer |
A practical test: think about the last project you enjoyed most. If the best part was solving the technical problem, stay on the developer path. If it was the moment someone outside your team started using what you built, look seriously at the FDE path.
You don’t have to choose forever
The first path is a reasonable step toward the second. Getting good at using AI in your own development work, then building small AI features, gives you a feel for the technology before committing to a bigger career change. Full stack developers also start with an advantage here, because integrating with messy client systems uses skills they already have.
