More products now have AI inside them: chatbots, assistants, recommendation features, agents that take actions. Someone has to decide whether those features are good enough to ship, and traditional test cases can’t do it alone, because the same input can give different outputs. That’s the work of an AI test engineer, and it’s a natural next step for QA engineers.
This roadmap shows how to make the move in about three to four months alongside your current work.
What changes for an AI test engineer
| Area | QA engineer | AI test engineer |
|---|---|---|
| Expected results | One correct output per test | A range of acceptable outputs, judged against criteria |
| Test data | Test cases and fixtures | Golden datasets of real inputs with acceptable answers |
| Pass or fail | Binary | A quality score and a threshold the team agrees on |
| Regressions | Code changes break behavior | Prompt or model changes quietly lower quality |
| Security testing | OWASP Top 10, access control | Also prompt injection, data leakage, and unsafe agent actions |
The roadmap
| Phase | When | Goal | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Use AI in your testing | Weeks 1 to 3 | Speed up your current work | Generate test cases and automation scripts with AI, and write bug reports faster, reviewing everything |
| 2. Learn how LLM features work | Weeks 3 to 5 | Know what you’re testing | Learn enough Python and API basics to call a model, and understand prompts, retrieval, and agents |
| 3. Build evaluation sets | Weeks 5 to 8 | Define “good enough” | Build a golden set for a real or sample feature and score outputs against it |
| 4. Use evaluation tools | Weeks 8 to 11 | Test at scale | Run evaluations with frameworks such as DeepEval, RAGAS, or Promptfoo, and compare LLM-as-judge scores with human ratings |
| 5. Test AI-specific risks | Weeks 11 to 14 | Catch what traditional tests miss | Test for hallucination, drift after a model change, and prompt injection |
The evaluation skills that matter most
| Type of AI test | Question it answers | How you test it |
|---|---|---|
| Quality | Are answers correct and grounded in the right sources? | Golden sets, LLM-as-judge checked against human ratings |
| Regression | Did a prompt or model change make it worse? | Rerun the evaluation set on every change, with a pass threshold |
| Safety | Can it be tricked into ignoring instructions or leaking data? | Prompt injection and data leakage test cases |
| Operations | Is it fast and cheap enough at real traffic? | Latency and cost-per-request measurements under load |
Skills to show, and how
| Skill | Evidence you can show |
|---|---|
| Golden set design | A set of 30 to 50 real inputs with acceptable answers and the criteria behind them |
| Automated evaluation | An evaluation run in a framework such as DeepEval or Promptfoo, with results you can explain |
| Judging the judge | A comparison of LLM-as-judge scores against human ratings on the same outputs |
| Security testing | A short report of prompt injection attempts and which ones succeeded |
| Quality gates | A CI step that blocks a release when the evaluation score drops below the threshold |
A structured option
This is AgileFever’s course, so take the suggestion with that in mind.
GenAI & Agentic AI for QA and Test Engineers covers phases 1, 4, and 5 in 12 hours: AI test generation, self-healing scripts, bug reports, testing agents, AI and LLM evaluation with DeepEval, RAGAS, and Promptfoo, and triage agents. It ends with a final test. The prerequisite is Python for AI (6 hours). The price is $450 in the US or ₹25,000 in India, with cohorts starting November 2 and December 7, 2026, and monthly in 2027.

FAQ
Do I need to be an automation engineer first?
It helps, but manual testers can start with phase 1 and the evaluation work, which relies more on judgment than on code.
Will AI replace QA engineers?
It automates a lot of repetitive test work. Deciding whether an AI feature is good enough to ship still needs people, and that’s the part of the job that’s growing.
Is “AI test engineer” a real job title?
Increasingly, though it also appears as AI quality engineer or LLM evaluation engineer. The skills matter more than the title.
