Data engineering and MLOps sit next to each other in most companies, use some of the same tools, and both get described as “the plumbing behind AI.” So it’s easy to assume MLOps vs data engineer is a choice between two names for one career. They’re not. A data engineer makes sure the right data arrives in the right place, reliably. An MLOps engineer makes sure models trained on that data get deployed, monitored, and retrained without breaking.
This post compares AgileFever’s two bootcamps for these roles and helps you choose based on the work you want to do.
MLOps vs data engineer: the two roles in one table
| Data engineer | MLOps engineer | |
|---|---|---|
| Main output | Reliable data pipelines, warehouses, and streams | Reliable model training, deployment, and monitoring |
| Main users | Analysts, data scientists, and business teams | Data scientists and product teams shipping ML features |
| Typical problem | The nightly load failed, and the dashboard is wrong | The model’s accuracy dropped, and nobody noticed for a month |
| Core skills | SQL, Spark, pipeline design, data modeling, streaming | CI/CD for models, experiment tracking, containers, monitoring for drift |
The two bootcamps side by side
| Data Engineer BootCamp | MLOps BootCamp | |
|---|---|---|
| Hours | 80 | 60, all live |
| Modules | 10 | 17 |
| Capstone | A production data platform: ingestion, transformation, warehouse, streaming, CI/CD | Fraud detection or product recommendation, end to end on Google Cloud |
| Assessment | Final assessment and final project; no certification exam | No exam; complete the modules and capstone |
| Background | Basic programming and databases; DevOps experience helps | Basic Python; DevOps experience helps but isn’t required |
| Cloud | Google Cloud | Google Cloud and Vertex AI, with an overview of AWS and Azure |
| Price | Contact the team; not listed on the page at the time of writing | $2,000 or ₹75,000 |

How much the tools overlap
More than the roles do. Both programs use Python, Git, GitHub Actions, Docker, Airflow, MLflow, DagsHub, and Google Cloud. Where they split is the core of each job: Spark, Kafka, and warehouses for data engineering; model training, data versioning, Kubernetes, and model monitoring for MLOps.
Count of distinct tools and platforms
Source: tools named in AgileFever’s Data Engineer and MLOps BootCamp curricula, October 2026. Counting is ours.
The shared tools are mostly delivery tools: version control, CI/CD, containers, and orchestration. That means whichever program you take first, the second one will feel familiar in places, but the core skills of each still have to be learned from scratch.
Which fits your goal
| If you… | Choose |
|---|---|
| Enjoy SQL and want to own how data flows through the company | Data Engineer |
| Are an ETL developer or data analyst moving into engineering | Data Engineer |
| Want to work with streaming data and large-scale processing | Data Engineer |
| Are a data scientist whose models never reach production | MLOps |
| Are a DevOps engineer moving into AI | MLOps |
| Want to work on LLM and agent operations eventually | MLOps |
| Aren’t sure yet, but like building infrastructure | Data Engineer first. Every ML system depends on data pipelines, and the skills transfer to many roles |
A note on “AI data engineer” roles
Some job ads ask for both: someone who builds pipelines and also supports model training data, feature stores, or retrieval data for LLM apps. If that’s the job you want, start with data engineering and add the MLOps pieces later. The reverse is harder, because MLOps assumes the data is already flowing.
FAQ
Can I take both?
Yes, and they complement each other. Leave a gap between them and apply the first at work before starting the second.
Which one pays more?
It depends on the market, company, and seniority more than the title. Both roles are in demand in companies with mature data teams.
Do either cover generative AI?
The MLOps BootCamp ends with LLMOps and Agentic AI Ops modules. The Data Engineer BootCamp doesn’t focus on generative AI.
